Brothers, Rik and Simon Arbukthnot, later joined by collaborator Chris Greive, are Monosapiens.
Delivering a heady mix of hip-hop. Jazz, Funk, and Electronica, this trio are catching plaudits across Scotland with their exciting melting-pot of sound.
Including live instrumentation alongside the samples to deliver an organic feel to their music, Monosapiens have also taken their work to live audiences, with Edinburgh’s own Jon Thompson assisting on bass.
While the brothers collaborate on production duties - Rik handles drums, bass, and keyboards, while Simon plays the guitar - Chris Greive adds more keys and some brass flourishes with his trombone. Outside of Monosapiens, Chris plays regularly with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra as well as with his group ‘NeWt,’ who were voted Jazz Ensemble of the Year in 2012.
As you can imagine, this all adds up to an eclectic mix of styles that has got people talking. However, it is not just the production that has excited fans, as Monosapiens have also recently teamed up with rapper, poet and singer / songwriter, Conscious Route. Born in London, Conscious Route grew up in Hertfordshire (near Cambridge), before moving to Edinburgh, where he has become an integral part of the lively music scene.
Monosapiens have also been working with Jenny Dryden, who appears on two tracks on the ‘Monosapiens E.P. Jenny has built up plenty of experience both with 8-piece House music band Tokyoblu and through work with James Brown Is Annie, as well as with her new rock band project, The Henchman School of Shooting.
Also working with Monosapiens is Alana Carew, front lady for new Edinburgh band Jester Echo. This talented individual brings her own unique twist of soul and has also featured on the Monosapiens 'Medicine LP,' which was released in 2013 by Gamma Proforma records label.
With a number of well-received releases already under their belt, Monosapiens look like a name to watch in 2014 and beyond!
Praise for Monosapiens:
“I loved Pelham! Was jiving to it before I went on air. Imaginative writing and great playing.”
